An X-ray is a painless medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. Radiography involves exposing a part of the body to a small dose of ionizing ratiation to produce images of the inside of the body. X-rays are the oldest and most frequently used form of medical imaging. At Boulder Community Hospital a medical physist tests equipment regularly to ensure that the patient recieves only the smallest dose of radation needed for the exam. Benefits of Fluoroscopy One of the most important benefits of this procedure is that it allows the doctor to view the body’s inner systems while they are actually functioning. For example, a doctor can watch a patient’s stomach as it digests food, allowing the doctor to obtain valuable diagnostic information. How It Works Fluoroscopy uses conventional X-ray imaging, often in conjunction with contrast materials that have been ingested by the patient. During this procedure, continuous images are taken and shown on a special video monitor. Everything possible is done to limit the number of X-ray exposures in this procedure. The fluoroscopy procedure takes 45 to 60 minutes. After changing into a hospital gown, the patient lies on a bed-like table that can be positioned horizontally or vertically. X-rays are taken while you stay very still. You may be asked to hold your breath a few seconds during the exposure. Although the X-ray causes no pain, sometimes a particular position you must hold can be uncomfortable. Prior to the exam, your physician will give you any special instructions you need to follow in preparation for the test. If you have a known allergy to contrast materials such as barium, please inform your doctor or the technologist before your exam. The fluoroscopy procedures are performed by board-certified radiologists and registered radiologic technologists. A radiologist interprets the results of the exam and sends a report to your physician.
